Volunteer - Peer Supporter - patient to patient visits and support

Role: PEER VOLUNTEER
Dept: Care Services
Where: By telephone/hospital/ clients homes
When: As required
Commitment: Maximum 3hrs per week
Duration: Ongoing

Purpose of role:

This is a key role providing crucial support to those diagnosed with cancer. Often people need someone they can talk to on a personal level who have been through the same experience and that can be provided by peer volunteers.

Responsibilities and Duties:

To contact cancer sufferers by phone or visit in home or hospital to offer support and assurance.
Peer volunteers are referred to clients by UCF, at the client’s request.

Skills / Qualifications needed:

Peer volunteers need personal experience of cancer and must be finished with their own treatment for at least two years.
This is a very sensitive role and requires that volunteers be

  1. extremely reliable
  2. trustworthy
  3. diplomatic
  4. empathetic
  5. good listeners
  6. committed to confidentiality

Training Provided:

Two full days of training are provided in the UCF premises prior to contact with clients

Reports to:

Care Services Co-Ordinator/ Volunteer Co-Ordinator
